Frequently asked questions.

 FAQs

  • Bring a water bottle or small towel if you wish, but you don’t need to bring anything. We provide top-of-the-line mats and various props that are incorporated in class, like small hand weights, yoga blocks, yoga straps, resistance bands & balls. All items are thoroughly cleaned following each use. If you prefer to bring your own mat or other items, you are welcome to do that, but most people enjoy having everything prepared and provided for them.

  • You’ll want to wear something easy to move in, similar to what you might wear for a yoga or other workout class. Many people find leggings and a tank top ideal – something that won’t lift-up if you fold forward, so you can move freely without worry. Sometimes men like to wear shorts with compression shorts underneath for coverage or athletic pants are great too. Classes are done in bare feet or socks with grippy dots on the soles to prevent slipping. Whatever feels most comfortable for you is perfect. We sell great grippy socks here if you’d like to purchase them.

  • Our signature classes are a based on the original Lotte Berk method, which was developed by a professional ballet dancer who created an intelligent regimen to rehabilitate following a major back injury – incorporating approachable, controlled movements to build strength and increase flexibility, so she could dance again.

Our founder traveled to London to train directly with Lotte Berk’s Daughter, Esther Fairfax, and she is certified in the “Pure Lotte Method” as well as multiple other barre methodologies. The class is absolutely not a dance class so don’t worry about coordination or choreography of any kind - that’s not what you’ll see here. Since this is a whole body mindful movement methodology with a keen focus on form. You’ll find each series of movements works specific major and minor muscles with precision. There are elements of class that also draw from yoga, Pilates (Lotte Berk & Joseph Pilates were contemporaries when they were both creating their original movement classes) and traditional calisthenics. You will stand taller, become physically and mentally stronger and more focused. Your joints will feel more open and your posture will improve thanks to a thoughtful approach to work every muscle group in the body with an emphasis on core (not just abdominals, but back strengthening & side body muscle groups as well).

In addition to the physical workout which trains your body to move with greater fluidity, efficiency and balance, our signature class is infused with mindfulness. We guide your focus to the breath, body awareness and details of form to achieve a moving medication. Establishing a clear mind and connecting personal intentions with positive body awareness is a powerful benefit of our classes as well.

  • If you come 3x per week, you’ll start to feel a difference in a week, and see a difference in a month. The more consistent and frequent your practice is, the more rapidly you’ll experience results. Each person comes with different goals and desired results in-mind since there are so many benefits to this methodology. The class is designed to be intense in the work if you wish, but very gentle on joints (low or no impact in most of the movements) and we show you specifically how to execute everything to ensure you’re working safely, protecting from injury and moving thoughtfully. After class we hope you’ll feel pleasantly sore – like you’ve done something great for yourself – but not depleted or in pain. You can safely take class as often as your schedule allows for.

  • No problem, truly. We welcome all ages and all levels and love working with absolute beginners or those who have been away from movement for a long time, and are ready to start fresh in a welcoming environment. If you come consistently you’ll surely increase flexibility and range of motion, but all the stretches we do are extremely approachable for all. Additionally, variations and modifications are always offered if you’re recovering from an injury or have specific sensitivity in a particular area. After working each muscle group we’ll take a rewarding stretch of the muscles we just used, but don’t expect to be asked to contort into any extreme positions or be surrounded by people that stretch like gumby

  • If you can walk a block, and move from a standing position to a seated position on the floor and get back up again unassisted, you’ll be able to successfully enjoy our classes. Our instructors are experienced with all levels and genuinely enjoy absolute beginners. We’ll show you everything you need to know before class starts and guide you every step of the way. Our community is inclusive and the atmosphere is supportive and not competitive.

  • In the entrance foyer to our studio you’ll find an area to remove your street shoes upon arrival, to keep our studio floors clean and germ free. You’ll walk up a flight of stairs and find lots of hooks and a spacious area to hang any coats, bags or other personal items. There are restrooms available to freshen up before or after class, stocked with basic toiletries for your use. They provide plenty of room to change clothes if you wish, but there are no showers.

  • Our policies have evolved since the beginning of the pandemic, and will likely continue to do so. All our instructors are fully vaccinated. We offer all of our live classes online via zoom for clients that prefer to join us from home or are not vaccinated. Starting in January 2022 we will require attestation of vaccination for all clients who wish to take class in-person in the studio. This will be done as part of the general waiver all clients sign prior to their first class. We’re now included a requirement for you to attest that you have received at least one J&J vaccine or 2 other vaccines to be fully vaccinated. Currently there is no masking policy. We want clients to feel comfortable doing what they feel is best for them regarding masks.

We thoroughly clean all mats, surfaces and props after each use and there is hand sanitizer available. Our studio is well ventilated and if you prefer instructors to maintain physical distance we will certainly respect this. If you welcome hands-on adjustments and guidance we can provide this too if you wish. We’ll check in with you on your preferences before class.
